Identification and Education of Exceptional Students

American Sign Language I

Total Fees: $200.00 Location: Claxton Elementary School. Instructor: Bonnie Thompson. Course description: Are you interested in learning sign language? Have you ever met anyone who is deaf or hard of hearing? Are you interested in learning about deaf culture or in learning the American Sign Language alphabet? Is there a deaf child at your school whom you would like to communicate with? - This course will offer an orientation into socializing and working with deaf individuals. This course looks at the audiological vs. cultural perspective, historical content for Deafness/deaf individuals as well as gives participants hands on practice in learning American Sign Language.

VB MAPP Training

Cherry Street, Jesup GA Time: 8:30am-3:30pm Registration Fees: 3 participants from a single school system can register for $75.00 (Please make checks and Purchase orders payable to Southeast GLRS) Instructor: Dr. Lorrie Spencer This workshop is designed to teach professionals how to use the VB MAPP assessment as a tool. Individuals will be able to: review areas assessed on the VB MAPP; identify areas of weakness; write IEP objectives in all areas assessed on the VB MAPP; implement the VB MAPP; use the VB MAPP to track progress for individuals with autism and developmental disabilities.

Participants will be able to: identify areas of difficulty across the natural environment for individuals with autism; incorporate teaching strategies that address skills used in the natural environment; focus on teaching communication and social skills in everyday activities; focus on increasing functional skills and spontaneous communication with individuals with autism; help parents implement the above strategies with their children in the home environment.
