Coastal and Southeast GLRS Joint Session 1

Collaborative Communities is the District 14/15 Special Education Director’s Consortium. The information is sent from the GaDOE for the GLRS Directors to redeliver. The priorities for the 2018-2019 school year are IEP Development and Implementation, Evaluation and Eligibility Determination Process, and Parent Procedural Safeguards. Session one was designed to provide the foundational principals of successful leadership and practices for General Supervision. Activities included developing, refining and implementing policies, procedures, and practices. The following districts participated: Appling, Bryan, Bulloch, Camden, Candler, CGCA GNETS, Chatham, Coastal Academy GNETS, Effingham, Evans, Jeff-Davis, Liberty, Long, McIntosh, Screven, Tattnall, Toombs, Vidalia-City, Wayne, and GNETS Cedarwood.

2018 Debra Brantley Awards Banquet

On February 2, 2018 Southeast GLRS hosted the Third Annual District 14 Debra Brantley Award Recognition Banquet.  It was held in Candler County in the Bigwood Community Room.  Debra Brantley was a long-time special educator who exemplified what it truly means to be an advocate for children.  Recipients of the Debra Brantley Award displayed characteristics of someone who had a heart for students with disabilities like Debra Brantley and supported or contributed to the success of a student(s) with a disability in some way.  The following were the 2018 Debra Brantley Award Recipients:

District 14 Collaborative Communities and Holiday Party

The Special Education Leadership teams of the Southeast GLRS Collaborative Communities had the pleasure of having their December meeting and Holiday Party held at Watermelon Creek Vineyard located in Glennville, Ga.  The day started off with the district meeting followed by an amazing lunch and a fun and “friendly” gift exchange game.

Check & Connect Mentor Training

On November 7th and 8th participants from both Southeast GLRS and Coastal GLRS attended a two day workshop that focused on strategies for establishing successful mentor/mentee relationships using the Check & Connect Model.  The presenter, Joseph Angaran who is a national trainer for Check & Connect, engaged the participants in discussions and activities that revolved around establishing relationships and working with families.  Check & Connect is a structured mentoring intervention to promote student success and engagement at school and with learning through relationship building and systematic use of data.  The University of Minnesota’s Institute on Community Integration collaborated with professionals in Minneapolis Public Schools to develop the model.

Behavior Academy

Southeast GLRS hosted a behavior academy on October 3-4, 2017 at the Tattnall County Board of Education.  Holly Brant who is the Behavioral Specialist for Southeast GLRS, discussed topics such as conducting a functional behavioral assessment, writing behavior intervention plans and understanding functions of behavior.  The academy will have a second session which will be conducted on November 29-30, 2017.  Participants who complete the two sessions will have the opportunity to schedule on-site visits to receive technical assistance.

Reading Support for District 14

Southeast GLRS was proud to collaborate with JP Associates and sponsor a reading professional development for teachers in District 14.  This workshop was designed to meet the needs of special education teachers providing instruction in the area of reading in a resource classroom.  The presenter was Kim Burgess, a School Improvement Specialist with JP Associates.  Technical assistance will be provided at the classroom level for the participants.

Three Rivers Transition Council Resource Fair

On September 21, 2017 Southeast GLRS partnered with Three Rivers Transitions Council to host a post-secondary transition fair for parents and educators of students with disabilities.  Participants were able to gather information on services and resources available in the state of Georgia.  The fair was held in Vidalia, Ga. at Southeastern Tech’s Economic Development Building from 8:30 to 3:30.

GAA Training at Southeast GLRS

Both veteran and beginning special education teachers met at Southeast GLRS on September 19, 2017 to discuss the Georgia Alternate Assessment (GAA).  Joy Peterson, an independent GAA consultant, presented the group with topics that included an overview of the GAA, standards selection, determining central standards-based skills, and developing appropriate instructional tasks.  The teachers were able to participate in practical, hands-on activities in the morning and in the afternoon they were able to work on their individual student portfolios. 

September Paraprofessional Training

On September 19, 2017 a group of 40 special education paraprofessionals met at the Tattnall County Board of Education to start their journey of a four session paraprofessional training.  The first session addressed the qualities of a good paraprofessional and issues around confidentiality in special education.  The group was engaged in various activities and discussions.  The next session will be in October where the participants will learn about the different types of disabilities in the classroom.
